After more than four months of covert construction, Boring Company has finally finished constructing a portion of its hyperloop tunnel under Los Angeles and company founder Elon Musk has given the public a first look through an Instagram post.
The photo, also shared on Musk’s official Twitter account Oct. 28, is simply captioned, “The Boring Company tunnel under LA.” Musk tells Futurism that it shows a 500 ft. long segment of a 2 mile tunnel to the airport.
“Should be 2 miles long in three or four months and hopefully stretch the whole 405 N-S corridor from LAX to the 101 in a year so,” replies Musk to a Twitter user when asked about the featured tunnel.
Additionally, on Instagram, Musk revealed that the first route will go through 405 from LAX to the 101 with on and off-ramps every mile. “It will work like a fast freeway, where electric skates carrying vehicles and people pods on the main artery travel at up to 150mph, and the skates switch to side tunnels to exit and enter,” writes Musk. He points out that the tunnel is different from subways as it has no stops.
Construction of the tunnel began this summer in Hawthorne, under SpaceX’s headquarters. The original plan includes a 49 mile tunnel but in August, the company sought permission from the local government to extend the tunnel for another 2 miles. A part of the extension is the one shown in Musk’s social media posts.
Boring Company’s tunnels are designed to address traffic congestion problems in urban areas and to provide faster transport to the city airport. Aside from Los Angeles, other municipal governments have also recently expressed their interests in having a similar structure under their cities.
