Hudson Pacific plans major expansion for Hollywood’s Sunset Gower Studios

Hudson Pacific Properties (HPP) has filed plans with the City of Los Angeles for the preservation and enhancement of Sunset Gower Studios.

HPP’s plan calls for major changes to the 16-acre studio complex at 6050 W Sunset Blvd. It includes demolition of more than 160,000 sq.ft. of existing structures and the construction of 628,000 sq.ft. of new production facilities.

Overall, the proposed project will add 467,400 sq.ft. of floor space to Sunset Gower Studios, making it two times larger than Hollywood Target which sits nearby. This new space will be spread among three buildings and a parking structure.

The studio complex was established in 1918 by CBC Film Sales, which was later renamed as Columbia Pictures. It served as the production venue for Hollywood classics like “It Happened One Night” and “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.” In 2007, HPP purchased the property and built a six-story building that is now being occupied by Technicolor.

Christopher Barton, executive vice president of development and capital investments at HPP, told Curbed that “modernizing” the campus will enable them to continue supporting the “ongoing renaissance in the entertainment production in Hollywood.”

Currently, HPP is also constructing a 13-story office tower across the historic Sunset Bronson Studios Building, which it also owns. It also recently completed building the Icon Tower at the corner of Sunset Blvd and Van Ness Ave., which Netflix leased in early 2017.
