Revitalization plan brings 146 projects along 19 miles of the LA River

A master plan calling for the reinvention of the Los Angeles River and construction of projects on its surrounding areas has been released, along with a draft plan that involves a 19-mile segment.

While construction of public spaces is underway at different sites along the 51-mile body of water, the revitalization plan has shifted its focus to the southern segment that runs from Vernon to Long Beach as the Lower Los Angeles River Working Group released its proposal for the particular area.

The Lower LA Revitalization Plan includes a total of 146 individual projects set to be built in and around the river. Out of this, the plan highlights seven signature projects which include the following:

• Public spaces and housing at Cudahy Park
• A park and dirt bike facility at Atlantic Blvd. in Vernon
• Floating boardwalks through Long Beach, with new access at Willow St.
• Recreation areas and links to existing bike trails at Greenleaf and Del Amo Blvds.
• New crossings and public art space at Compton Creek
• A park, amphitheater and new stormwater capture facilities at Wrigley Heights in Long Beach

In general, the plan aims to construct projects that would allow greater access to the river’s concrete channel. Terraced seating and ramps are slated for construction to allow residents to explore the riverbed in select areas. Bike lanes, pedestrian-friendly sidewalk improvements and horse trails have also been proposed.

Through the revitalization plan’s official website, the working group is encouraging comments from the community on the draft plan and its signature concepts. The deadline for feedback is on January 11, 2018.
