$525 million Lucas Museum of Narrative Art takes shape with building permits

Plumbing and HVAC permits have recently been issued to subcontractors working on the $525 million Lucas Museum of Natural History in South Los Angeles.

Murray Plumbing & Heating Corporation is working to install underground utilities for the five-story building, for which Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Company is the general contractor. Meanwhile, Acco Engineered Services Inc. has been issued a HVAC permit for the installation of the building’s garage and transformer room.

The futuristic-looking building at 3800 S. Vermont, designed by MAD Architects, will house art focused “on the power of a single image to tell a story, inspire emotion, or encapsulate universal truths.” It’s scheduled to open in 2021.

Hathaway Dinwiddie has posted three bid packages (the most recent closed on July 10) for subtrades and suppliers, encouraging bids from women, minority and small-business owners, but says it isn’t discouraging bids from contractors not qualified for MBWE certification.

Although this project is privately financed with no public subsidies, Hathaway Dinwiddie’s objective is to meet and surpass local, state, and federal government standards for diversity and inclusion. Therefore, Hathaway Dinwiddie has instructed all trades and/or subcontractors to make every effort to maximize opportunities to engage certified MBE/WBE/DVBE/SBEs not only in material supply and project labor, but also in technical and management roles on the project.
