$47 million grant announced for Interstate 5 improvement project

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority has received a $47-million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the Interstate 5 Golden State Chokepoint Relief Program.

The funding is provided through the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America discretionary grant program.

“This $47 million INFRA grant will help increase much-needed capacity to reduce the congestion on the 5,” Secretary Elaine Chao said in a statement.

The project is designed to increase freight flow along a congested corridor. It generates safety and mobility benefits by adding 13 miles of High Occupancy Vehicle lanes and 2.7 miles of new truck lanes, as well as improving bridges. It will provide greater access to the Los Angeles metropolitan area for passenger and freight traffic.
