Destination Crenshaw receives funding commitment

An outdoor open-air public art park, cultural experience and museum that will celebrate the Black community in Los Angeles, is closer to being realized.

Curbed Los Angeles is reporting that the Metro board of directors (the transportation agency that plans, oversees and co-ordinates transportation projects and services within L.A. County) has awarded $15 million to the project known as Destination Crenshaw.

The park will be located along the 1.3 miles of Crenshaw Boulevard and is part of the project to extend and develop the Crenshaw/LAX light rail line.

Along with public art, the project will include a new community amphitheater with an elevated overlook with views of the downtown skyline, the Hollywood sign, South Los Angeles, and the entire Destination Crenshaw project. It will also showcase The Wall, a famed location featuring painted murals.

In total, Curbed Los Angeles says the entire project has a budget of approximately $100 million.

Perkins+Will is the architecture firm behind the project. It is the same company that designed the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and the Motown Museum.

Construction is expected to begin this fall.
