Former Sacramento arena could become 183-acre medical campus after upcoming city council vote.

Sacramento leaders are preparing for a vote that could transform the former home of the Sacramento Kings basketball team, including a new California Northstate University Hospital and medical campus, as well as the Innovation Park Planned Unit Development in the city’s North Natomas area.

The city’s Planning and Design Committee voted to unanimously approve and forward a recommendation for approval to the city council in January, KCRA-3 reported on Feb. 14.

University leaders say the proposal would include not only a medical campus and housing, but also would create a new economy for that area.

“It would produce an absolutely, all-around new labor workforce to the tune of $600 million per year,” said Dr, Alvin Cheung, president and CEO of California Northstate University.

The proposed 183-acre medical campus development could create as many as 900 construction jobs, Cheung said.

“The CNU Hospital and Innovation campus will be place-making for the entire region and creates the economic engine promised to this community when the Kings moved downtown,” said Sacramento vice-mayor Angelique Ashby.
