Caltrans bridge construction challenge: 40,000 buzzing bees

Caltrans construction workers discovered a buzzing challenge when they were doing bridge work on Hwy. 154 in Santa Barbara.

The construction workers discovered a large, 8-foot long bee hive in a cavity of a wooden sign post — containing about 40,000 bees.

In an April 26 Twitter feed, Caltrans District 5 says “the bees were safely removed to a commercial hive aided by beekeepers before being released to agricultural areas to pollinate crops.”
