San José awarded $62 million for transportation safety projects

The Metropoiltan Transportation Commission (MTC) has approved five San Jose projects aimed at improving transportation safety. The total grants awarded is $62.34 million.

Winning San José projects include Vision Zero safety improvements, conversion of one-way streets to two-way, and revamping streets to better accommodate walking, bicycling, and transit use.

“In 2022, San José had the most pedestrian and traffic-related deaths in our modern history – each death is a devastating and irreplaceable loss for our entire community,” said Mayor and MTC Commissioner Matt Mahan. “Our traffic safety challenges won’t fix themselves – and infrastructure improvements are one of the most significant ways to make the changes needed to save lives.

Some proposed projects received funding just for initial phases, while others were funded through construction.

San José project awards:

Story-Keyes Complete Streets – environmental review, design and construction

• Grant amount: $36.4 million
• Project cost: $41.1 million

White Road Pedestrian Safety Improvements – environmental review and preliminary design only.

• Grant amount: $3.4 million
• Project cost: $74.4 million

Jackson Avenue Complete Streets – environmental review, design, and construction along Alum Rock Avenue to Story Road

• Grant amount: $3.3 million
• Total cost: $50.8 million

Julian and St. James – livable streets couplet conversion

• Grant amount: $12.9 million
• Total cost: $16.2 million

Signalized Intersections Pedestrian Safety Improvements – Design and construction of intersection improvements at First & Virginia streets; Seventh & Reed streets; Naglee & Dana avenues

• Grant amount: $6.3 million
• Total cost: $7.9 million
