The Sacramento region has been awarded two grants totalling $42 million from the state’s transit project program for the redevelopment of the site of Sacramento’s historic train station.

Capitol Corridor will use funds to build a bus depot and mobility hub at the Sacramento Valley Station.

That project is a major part of the decade-long plan to turn the train station into a multimodal transit hub serving bikes, buses, trains and light rail, and redevelop the surrounding 28 acres with commercial space, housing and a hotel.

The new bus depot is a $140 million project.

Work includes building  a two-story regional bus and mobility hub at the Sacramento Valley Station, the city announced in a press release.

“This crucial funding will advance SVS’s transformation into Northern California’s premier rail and transit hub,” Greg Taylor, project manager with Sacramento’s Department of Public Works said in a statement. “We thank CalSTA for the continued support to improve the integration of the statewide rail and bus system.”

Construction of the bus and mobility hub has a projected cost of $140 million including surface streets and utilities.

“Increasing Sacramento Valley Station’s capacity for more climate friendly transportation options is a key strategy in our fight to reach carbon zero in Sacramento,” said Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg. “The improvements funded by this grant will encourage commuters or visitors to say ‘yes’ to leaving their car behind.”
