Executive order supports small business growth in LA

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass signed an executive order last week to “identify burdensome processes and fees” that impede small business creation, development and growth.

“People want to start and grow their businesses in Los Angeles, but over the years, City Hall has made those dreams harder to achieve by requiring fees upon fees and complicated and time-consuming approval processes,” Bass said. “It’s past time to make it easier for small and minority businesses to do business in L.A.”

The directive requires:

  • review of existing business taxes and fees and reasonable opportunities to reduce those costs with special attention to how fees impact small businesses + and micro businesses;
  • assessment of the existing processes and timelines associated with starting and operating a business in the city
  • comparative analysis to those of other jurisdictions’ business regulations and approaches to fostering business growth and attraction

A new Los Angeles business steering committee was established to identify barriers and report initial findings within 90 days.
