Paint permits now required on pre-1978 structures in Oakland

California Construction News staff writer

Effective July 1, the City of Oakland requires paint permits for all projects where paint will be disturbed in a structure built before 1978 to obtain a paint permit as part of the work.

If projects will only be conducting paint activities (exterior and/or interior) and disturbance of paint will take place, a separate paint permit will be required. If projects will be disturbing paint (exterior/interior) as part of a remodel or alteration, they will be required to add paint work to the description of on the building permit application.

Also, all paint-related work will require that a lead-based paint work plan be submitted as part of the permit application and non-owner-occupied properties will require that a contractor with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Program (RRP) be retained to perform the work.
