San Francisco has clinched an $8.1 million federal grant to refurbish three blocks of the Buchanan Street Mall project in the Western Addition neighborhood. Funds are part of a $58.3 million announcement to revitalize public spaces and enhance recreational opportunities in 11 states.

“The renovation of Buchanan Street Mall will create an inviting outdoor space for all, reflecting our commitment to equity and community,” said Mayor London Breed. “This investment will foster creativity, play, and connections across generations.”

The project, stretching five blocks between Eddy and Grove streets, will feature amenities such as a performance stage, seating areas, playgrounds, an adult exercise area, and a multi-sports court. Construction is slated to commence this autumn.

The vision for the Buchanan Street Mall Project, developed since 2014 in partnership with the community, aims to create a safe, equitable gathering space celebrating the neighborhood’s history.

“We are thrilled to be breaking ground this year,” said Phil Ginsburg, general manager of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department. “This federal funding ensures that community-driven ideas will shape the future of Buchanan Street Mall.”

Originally constructed in 1975, the Buchanan Street Mall underwent major renovations in the late 1980s and early 1990s. After years of underuse, the project began to gain momentum in 2015 with temporary activations inviting neighbors to enjoy the space.
