The Balboa Library and Fire Station No. 1 project is moving into the final design stage, after Newport Beach city council chose one of three potential layouts, increasing the building’s size by about 9,200 sq. ft.
Construction bidding is expected to start next summer and the project’s estimated cost is $16 million, including 3,770 sq. ft. for the library and 5,400 sq. ft. for the fire station.
The project will also include a playground and green space along Balboa Boulevard, with public parking and the library entrance located off Bay Avenue.
The Balboa Library, originally built in 1929 was expanded in 1952 and 1962. Fire Station No. 1, constructed in 1962 is 3,431 sq. ft.
