Granite has been awarded a contract valued at approximately $26 million by San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to rehabilitate Taxiway Z and a portion of Taxiway S, key components of the airport’s airfield infrastructure. The project is scheduled to begin in August 2025 and be completed by November 2025.

Funded by SFO and included in Granite’s second-quarter Committed and Awarded Projects (CAP), the initiative is part of the airport’s broader Capital Improvement Program (CIP), aimed at enhancing safety, efficiency, and long-term operational capacity.

Taxiway Z is a vital route for aircraft traveling between terminals, maintenance hangars, and cargo facilities. The planned upgrades will include reconstruction of asphalt concrete pavement, installation of new LED airfield lighting and signage, a 12kV electrical duct bank replacement, improved pavement markings, and enhanced drainage systems.

“We are excited to be part of this critical infrastructure project at SFO,” said Brent Fogg, Granite Vice President of Regional Operations. “Our collaboration with SFO on the Taxiway Z Rehabilitation Project underscores our commitment to delivering exceptional projects and advancing the safety and efficiency of airport operations.”

The rehabilitation effort falls under SFO’s “Delivering Exceptional Projects” initiative, which emphasizes transparency, early contractor collaboration, and alternative delivery methods — principles that align with Granite’s operational priorities. The work is expected to support future opportunities for collaboration on additional Alternate Procurement Projects at SFO.

Granite’s Santa Clara facility will supply approximately 24,105 tons of hot mix asphalt (HMA) for the project, ensuring quality control and timely delivery of materials.

The improvements are intended to keep SFO at the forefront of aviation infrastructure, supporting one of the busiest airports in the United States as it continues to modernize and expand to meet growing demand.
