Construction is officially underway on The Becker, the first affordable housing development to break ground at Riverwalk San Diego.
The $190-million project is being developed by Wakeland Housing and Development Corporation in partnership with Hines, with Level 10 Construction serving as general contractor. MVE Architects designed the development.
When complete in mid-2027, The Becker will deliver 190 apartments for individuals and families earning 60 per cent or less of the area median income. The three-building community will be located near a planned MTS Green Line trolley stop and the San Diego River Trail, providing residents with easy access to transit and recreation.
“This groundbreaking represents more than just new construction – it’s the realization of Wakeland’s mission to transform lives and strengthen communities through high-quality affordable housing,” said Wakeland president and CEO Rebecca Louie. “By creating nearly 200 affordable homes in what will soon be one of San Diego’s most transportation-connected neighborhoods, we’re providing working families with more than shelter – it’s a foundation for opportunity, stability and long-term success.”
Named in honour of Evan Becker, a longtime advocate for affordable housing in San Diego, the project is designed to emphasize long-term affordability, sustainability and connectivity. Plans call for spacious courtyards, a community room with a computer lab and kitchen, bicycle parking and other resident amenities. A waitlist is expected to open in early 2027.
The Becker is the first affordable housing phase within the Riverwalk San Diego master plan. Once complete, Riverwalk will include 430 affordable homes along with public spaces, retail and office uses — creating what developers describe as a walkable, connected village in the heart of the city.
