Butte College has awarded the $22.5 million construction contract for its Chico Center expansion to Chico-based DH Slater & Son, with 48% of subcontractor and vendor participation coming from local businesses.
The project includes two new buildings: an 18,100-sq. ft. cosmetology and barbering facility and a 5,872-square-foot science laboratory.

The cosmetology building will relocate the program to the Chico Center and more than double annual capacity, from 60 to 150 students. It will include two cosmetology labs, a barbering lab, an esthetician lab, a manicure and pedicure lab, a classroom, eight faculty offices, a centralized supply dispensary and a color bar. Construction is expected to begin in September 2025 and finish in December 2026, with classes starting in January 2027.
The science building will feature a 34-student general science lab, a stockroom and four faculty offices. Designed to mirror labs on the main campus, it aims to provide Chico-area students with a consistent STEM learning experience while reducing travel. Construction is set to begin in January 2026 and conclude in March 2027, with classes starting in fall 2027.
“This is truly a community project, built by local hands and designed to support local students,” said Kim Jones, the college’s director of facilities. “These facilities will give students modern, permanent spaces to pursue their education — from cosmetology and barbering to science and STEM pathways.”
Superintendent/President Virginia Guleff said the expansion will increase opportunities for students and the community.
