San Francisco International Airport will close Runway 1 Right for six months in 2026 to repave the runway surface and upgrade adjacent taxiways, airport officials announced. The closure is scheduled to begin March 30, 2026, with the runway expected to reopen Oct. 2, 2026.
Granite Construction Company was awarded the $180 million contract for the work. The Federal Aviation Administration will provide $92.1 million in funding for the project. Work includes repaving the surface layer, improving adjacent taxiways, upgrading lighting systems, and repainting runway striping and markings.
During construction, all arrivals and departures will operate on runways 28 Left and 28 Right, while the parallel 1 Left runway will function as a taxiway to ease ground congestion. Officials said less than 10% of flights are expected to be delayed, with average delays under 30 minutes.
Airport leaders said the closure is part of ongoing efforts to maintain safe and efficient operations at SFO, one of the busiest airports in the United States.
