Arevon Energy Inc., a U.S.-based developer, owner and operator of renewable energy projects, has announced the start of construction on its Cormorant Energy Storage Project in Daly City, California.

The $600 million project will have a capacity of 250 megawatts and 1,000 megawatt-hours of storage, enough to power about 321,000 homes for up to four hours. The facility is expected to begin operations in 2027.

Cormorant will be owned and operated by Arevon under a long-term offtake agreement with MCE, an electricity provider serving more than 1.8 million customers across Contra Costa, Marin, Napa and Solano counties. The project was initially planned at 188 MW/752 MWh but was expanded to meet additional demand, with all added capacity contracted through MCE.

The project will use lithium iron phosphate batteries, designed for safe and efficient energy storage. Primoris Services Corp.’s Renewables group is handling engineering, procurement and construction. At peak, construction is expected to employ roughly 175 workers, supporting local hotels, restaurants and businesses. Over its lifetime, Cormorant is projected to generate more than $73 million in property tax revenue for schools, infrastructure and public services.

“The start of construction marks an important milestone for the Cormorant project and the Daly City community,” said Justin Johnson, chief executive officer of Arevon. “Projects like Cormorant strengthen California’s energy grid by storing power when it’s abundant and delivering it when it’s needed most.”

Arevon has invested in the community through partnerships with more than a dozen local organizations, including the Daly City Partnership, Pilipino Bayanihan Resource Center, Jefferson Union High School District and Bayshore Community Center, through donations, scholarships, sponsorships and volunteer work.

“Community engagement is not simply a box to check,” said Shanelle Montana, Arevon’s chief development officer. “It is a commitment to being present, authentic and aligned with the people who will live alongside our projects. We look forward to continuing this partnership throughout Cormorant’s construction and operations.”

Arevon has more than 3.7 gigawatts of renewable energy in operation nationwide, representing over $5 billion in capital investment, with 550 MW currently under construction in California. Recent milestones include the start of operations at the Peregrine Energy Storage Project, Eland 1 Solar-plus-Storage Project, Vikings Solar-plus-Storage Project and Condor Energy Storage Project, as well as offtake agreements for the Avocet Energy Storage Project. Several projects have received industry awards, including Proximo’s North America Storage Deal of the Year and IJGlobal’s Renewables Deal of the Year — Energy Storage Award.
