Construction has started on the Yolo County Main Monroe Jail expansion and renovation project in Woodland.

Lionakis is the project’s architect, while construction management is being handled by Kitchell. Broward Builders is serving as the general contractor.

Correctional News reports that the $33 million project is a large, multi-phased renovation and expansion of the main jail.

The expansion will add 32 beds, a stand-alone kitchen and laundry facility, and improve the outdated booking area. The project will also create additional space for the day reporting center. The medical and mental health facilities are being renovated and upgraded as well.

Technological advances are a part of the project and include the addition of video visitation as a supplement to the more traditional in-person visitation.

The project is set for completion in 2021.
