San Marcos City is preparing to begin construction on a $100 million project designed to minimize flooding risks and preserve and enhance creek habitat.

Sema Construction will serve as the primary construction contractor for the San Marcos Creek Project.

The project calls for raised roadway and new bridges over the San Marcos creek along Bent Ave. and Via Vera Cruz to reduce flooding and enhance safety; widened Discovery St. to four lanes with a bike lane on the south side; additional sidewalks and bike facilities; new community park with spaces and trails for recreation and relaxation; restoration and preservation of 1.5 miles of creek habitat.

Preliminary construction will begin late this year, while active construction is expected to start early 2020. The project would take up to two years to complete.
