Construction starting on affordable housing at San Jose train station

Construction is expected to start this month on an affordable housing project near the Tamien VTA and Caltrain station in San Jose.

San Jose-based developer The Core Companies has secured nearly $140 million in city, county and state funding for the housing and retail project, which includes 134 affordable apartments.

The project, which will include 134 affordable apartments and a childcare center, is the first housing development to begin construction on VTA property in more than 20 years.

Core Companies is partnering with VTA and Republic Urban Properties, to build affordable apartments and two market-rate housing building that will add another 434 apartments in the second phase of development.

VTA currently has several projects with about 1,600 housing units planned.
