Construction is underway on a fully affordable residential development in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury neighbourhood, designed by the Dutch practice Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) and local firm YA Studio.

“This is a meaningful step towards bringing 160 permanently affordable homes for families and at-risk youth to a vibrant and diverse neighbourhood steeped in history,” said Yakuh Askew, YA Studio’s principal. “We are thrilled to be part of a dedicated and diverse team with a shared goal to reimagine this urban in-fill site to not only provide housing, but also supportive services and neighbourhood-serving retail.”

The project is expected to be completed in spring of 2025.

The 194,000 sq ft project includes 160 homes and amenities for families, formerly unhoused families and youth. The ground floor will contain a neighbourhood community hub and retail space connected to Haight Street; there will also be gardens, an urban farm and a green roof.

According to OMA, the building’s design aims to maximise density and still create pockets of light and open spaces for residential and commercial tenants.
