Construction has started on the $20-million dollar renovation at Gallagher Square at Petco Park.
The San Diego Padres announced the off-season plan to revitalize the 2.7-acre area site beyond the stadium’s outfield to create a community park and space for concerts and events. Construction is expected to be complete in time for Petco Park’s anniversary 20th season in 2024. The team’s home opener is March 28 against the San Francisco Giants.
The project includes:
- playground and play area expanded for wider range of ages and abilities
- fenced, off-leash dog park
- improved play ball field
- Tony Gwynn terrace viewing deck and picnic space
- new technology and sound mitigation
Minor construction projects will continue after opening day until June 2024.
“Additionally, Gallagher Square will be reconfigured in a manner that will allow for portions of the park to remain open for public use more frequently,” according to a Padres news release.
