Construction underway on $3 million tiny home complex for homeless in Modesto

Construction is underway on a tiny home complex designed to house 42 homeless individuals in ModestoDignity Village Modesto Interim Housing will be built on city-owned land fronting Ninth Street between E and D streets.

DignityMoves, known for its use of prefabricated and modular materials, will design and build the development.

“We’re partnering with the City of Modesto and Stanislaus County to build Dignity Village Modesto Interim Housing,” Dignity Moves officials wrote on social media. “This $3 million initiative will provide 42 tiny homes on Ninth Street, offering housing and vital support services for those experiencing unsheltered homelessness with serious behavioral health conditions.

“We are grateful to our amazing partners in this important initiative.”

Each unit will be 70 sq. ft. and house one person. They will have air conditioning, heat, electricity and water.

The project includes bathrooms, showers, offices, a garden, dog run, dining and laundry facilities and other common spaces, according to a county document. There could be a mural along the fence that will go up along Ninth Street.

A $3 million tiny home complex for 42 homeless people with serious behavioral health conditions is expected to open by the end of the year in a partnership among Modesto, Stanislaus County and a housing nonprofit.
