Arcadian Infracom marked a significant milestone last week, breaking ground on a crucial segment of California’s Middle-Mile Broadband Network. The ceremony in Natomas launched the the Capitol Route, a vital stretch in the state’s ambitious project to build the nation’s largest open-access, Middle-Mile Broadband Network, highlighting the development of a 256-mile route of new broadband fiber from San Jose in Silicon Valley, through the Sierra Nevada Mountains, to Carson City, Nevada.
This infrastructure will enhance connectivity for millions of Californians, forming a cornerstone of the state’s comprehensive strategy to bridge the digital divide.
“We’re working in real-time to realize our bold vision of ensuring all Californians have access to high-speed internet, no matter where they come from or how much they make,” said Gov. Gavin Newsom. “The Middle-Mile Broadband Network is about more than technology — we’re connecting local communities that have for too long been left off the digital map.”
The California Department of Technology is making substantial progress, with 1,666 miles of active installation and construction completed. The project expects to deliver over 8,000 miles of broadband fiber, significantly improving broadband access for many underserved communities across the state.
Construction is expected to start on 33 new segments over the next three months, covering more than 1,590 miles. By the end of 2024, the initiative is expected to have over 3,256 miles under construction.
The network is designed to support the development of local last-mile broadband plans, with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) playing a key role, a strategic setup that allows these communities to avoid the high costs of foundational infrastructure, enabling them to focus on building their last-mile connections.
Also, the CPUC recently announced the sixth round of recommended awardees for last-mile broadband projects. This includes three tribes, as part of the $2 billion Last Mile Federal Funding Account Grant Program.
