The City of Santa Barbara will hold two community meetings to update progress on the Westside and Lower West Neighborhoods Transportation Management Plan Implementation Project. The project aims to improve safety and connectivity with new pedestrian and bicycle routes, addressing infrastructure gaps between the Westside and Lower West neighborhoods.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027.
Meetings will focus on the design of protected bike paths along Modoc Road, between Las Positas Road and Mission Street:
Virtual meeting: Wed. Sept. 25 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Zoom. To register: Zoom Link – Westside and Lower West Neighborhoods Transportation Management Plan Implementation Project
In-person meeting: Thurs. Sept. 26 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at La Cumbre Junior High School, 2255 Modoc Road, Santa Barbara.
In January 2024, the city held meetings where residents requested a redesign of the bike path on Modoc Road. The original plan featured a two-directional path on the north side of the road. Feedback now suggests a preference for one-directional bike paths on each side of Modoc Road.
The project includes:
- Protected Bike Paths: A one-mile stretch on Modoc Road and Portesuello Avenue, linking La Cumbre Jr. High and Santa Barbara Community Academy to the Las Positas/Modoc Multiuse Path and local bike-friendly streets.
- Infrastructure Improvements: New bike routes connecting the Westside and Lower West neighborhoods, plus sidewalk infill on Valerio Street, Manitou Road, and Pedregosa Street.
- Safety Enhancements: Upgrades at 15 crosswalks with curb extensions, rectangular rapid flashing beacons, refuge islands, and improved lighting.
- Corridor Lighting: Installation along San Andres Street and Modoc Road.
