California has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Federal government to collaborate on multi-benefit water projects throughout the Sacramento River Basin.

The MOU represents a commitment to coordinated planning, design, and implementation of floodplain projects that address critical issues such as flood protection, habitat restoration, groundwater recharge, and water supply reliability. It also aims to support agricultural and managed wetland operations.

“As California faces increasingly extreme weather patterns, it is essential to unite our efforts to meet the needs of our communities, wildlife, and economy,” said Governor Newsom. “This partnership underscores the importance of collaborative solutions in safeguarding our resources against climate impacts.”

The agreement was signed by representatives from various federal and state agencies, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, and California Natural Resources Agency.

The Sacramento Valley’s bypasses, which act as natural overflow areas, play a vital role in protecting farmland, cities, and communities from floodwaters. Additionally, these lowlands provide crucial habitats for numerous fish and bird species, including the migratory Chinook salmon.
