Caltrans has opened an application process for its sustainable transportation planning grants (STPG), inviting local, regional and tribal governments across California to propose innovative projects aimed at creating sustainable, climate-resilient transportation systems. With a focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting underserved communities, this funding is expected to address the impacts of climate change on transportation infrastructure.
The application deadline is Jan. 22, 2025, at 5 p.m., with grant awards expected to be announced next summer. This year, about $34 million in annual funding is available to support regional strategies for sustainable communities, aligning with California’s ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets while enhancing safety and transit accessibility across the state’s transportation network.
To assist potential applicants, Caltrans will host a series of application workshops starting next week and will provide ongoing technical support until the submission deadline. This initiative underscores Caltrans’ dedication to fostering sustainable transportation solutions that benefit all Californians while addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change. An application guide and application materials can be found on the Sustainable Transportation Planning Grants website.
Caltrans has significantly increased the Native American Tribal Government set-aside to $3 million, up from $800,000, including up to $2 million designated for Sustainable Communities and $1 million for Climate Adaptation Planning, highlighting Caltrans’ commitment to supporting tribal communities.
In addition to regular funding, this year’s grant cycle includes a one-time award of about $3.7 million specifically for climate adaptation planning, to enable governments to assess transportation-related climate vulnerabilities and develop targeted adaptation strategies for critical infrastructure.
Caltrans recently announced the award of $51 million in 2024-25 Sustainable Transportation Planning Grants for 89 projects designed to increase the state’s resilience to climate change. Of that total, $48.3 million, or 94 percent, will benefit disadvantaged communities throughout California. Click here for more information about these efforts.
