BZI, a Utah-based steel construction company, is expanding its footprint in California with a three-million-sq. ft. construction project in Salinas and a new permanent office in Bakersfield, creating local jobs and launching a new community engagement initiative.
The company announced it will attend the Monterey County Works Job Fair on May 27 to recruit additional workers for its Salinas project, which involves 21,000 tons of steel. Open positions include welders, ironworkers, bolters, safety representatives, quality control inspectors, and estimators.
As construction progresses, BZI reports contributing over $400,000 per month to the local economy through employee housing. The company also says local restaurants, food vendors, and suppliers serving the project have seen increased demand.
The Salinas project also marks the launch of BZI’s national Community Contributions Program, designed to support local efforts in education, health, humanitarian aid, and vocational development. The initiative is starting in Salinas and will expand to other markets where the company operates.
BZI operates the SteelTech Academy, a training and certification center offering OSHA certifications, equipment training, and a Department of Labor-approved apprenticeship program. The academy has issued thousands of certifications since 2021 and logs over 10,000 training hours annually.
Safety remains a key focus for the company. BZI reports a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) of 2.37 and an Experience Modification Rate (EMR) of 0.48, both below industry averages. Chief Safety Officer Jesus Cadena oversees implementation of safety policies and training.
The company says its goal is to improve both project outcomes and the lives of its team members and community partners. BZI has received multiple national awards for its workplace culture and safety standards.
