Construction crews have placed the final beam on Sequoia, a 512-bed student housing project at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), marking a major milestone in the university’s efforts to expand affordable, on-campus living options.
Developed through a design-build partnership between Sundt Construction and HMC Architects, the six-story, 155,000-sq. ft. building is expected to open in fall 2026. Once complete, it will increase CSUF’s total housing capacity to more than 2,600 beds, including 390 units reserved as affordable housing for students.
“Sequoia is more than just a place to live—it’s a vital part of our commitment to supporting student success through accessible and affordable housing,” said university officials during the topping-out ceremony, which brought together university leaders, construction crews, and project partners.
Located next to the Fullerton Arboretum and Botanical Garden, the development is designed with a wellness-focused “Garden Home” concept. It will feature apartment-style units—primarily two-bedroom, two-bathroom layouts—for upper-division students, along with a resident advisor unit and staff accommodations. Ground-floor amenities will include a market, mailroom, laundry, lounge spaces, and a landscaped courtyard intended as a tranquil gathering place for study and relaxation.
The $130 million project is part of a broader effort across the California State University system to address housing shortages and affordability concerns for students. The inclusion of affordable beds is intended to help alleviate the financial burden many students face in securing stable housing.
“By creating spaces where students can live, learn and thrive, Sequoia will contribute directly to academic achievement, mental well-being and community connection,” said a representative from Sundt Construction.
Construction will continue over the next year and a half with completion targeted for the start of the fall 2026 semester.
