With the first 19 gates of the new Terminal 1 complete, the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority has begun the next phase of construction, adding 11 more gates along with new customer lounges, a children’s play area, and additional dining and shopping options.
The expansion, known as Phase 1B, is scheduled for completion in 2028 and is part of an ongoing effort to modernize San Diego International Airport. Officials say the upgrades will provide travelers with a more seamless, comfortable, and connected airport experience.
“Phase 1B represents a major step toward building a smarter, more connected airport,” said Airport Authority officials. “With enhanced capacity and upgraded passenger spaces, Terminal 1 will be better equipped to welcome the travelers of tomorrow.”
Key Highlights of Phase 1B:
-
11 additional gates: The expansion increases the airport’s gate capacity, giving airlines greater flexibility and passengers smoother travel.
-
Upgraded customer lounges, new concessions, a children’s play area, and other infrastructure improvements aim to bring modern comfort to every step of the journey.
As part of the modernization, the original Terminal 1 has been permanently closed and is being demolished. Officials say the new facilities will combine improved design, technology, and service to enhance the overall passenger experience.
The project reflects the airport’s broader commitment to accommodate growth while offering a state-of-the-art environment for travelers.
