Wilton Rancheria and Sacramento Republic FC have announced that Republic Stadium at The Railyards will be built as a 20,000-plus seat, soccer-first venue, abandoning a prior plan for phased expansion.

The announcement last week follows the stadium’s groundbreaking in August 2025, the first major construction milestone in more than a decade. As construction progressed, Wilton Rancheria determined the project could realize its full vision from day one.

Site preparation was completed in late 2025. Public infrastructure work, including streets, utilities, and storm drains, will begin before the end of April 2026. Construction of foundations and vertical structures, including the canopy, will continue through 2027. The stadium is on track to open in 2028.

“With this stadium, Wilton Rancheria is reclaiming our space and matching the ambition of the region,” said Jesus Tarango, chairman of Wilton Rancheria. “As a Tribe of firsts, we’re proud to deliver the largest professional sports and entertainment venue in the region—a home where community comes together and our collective future takes shape.”

“Building bigger is a catalytic investment in the long-term transformation of downtown Sacramento. We are bringing the capital, vision, and execution needed to turn this site into a destination that drives economic impact, community connection, and sustained growth for the entire region,” said Chris Franklin, COO of Wilton Rancheria.

Construction and design details:

  • Capacity & Footprint: The stadium will span 14 acres with more than 500,000 square feet of space, hosting 20,000+ fans for soccer and up to 27,000 for concerts or special events.
  • Fan Experience: Features include over 20 seating options, a supporters’ plaza, safe-standing sections, a West premium tower, and elevated club spaces. The five-story seating bowl and twin videoboards will bring fans closer to the action than ever before.
  • Signature Canopy: The overhead canopy will cover every seat, supported by four trusses weighing 3,800 tons—three times the tonnage of the Tower Bridge—becoming a landmark on Sacramento’s skyline. Open corners and perforated cladding will provide airflow and comfort during the summer season.

Republic Stadium is designed to be the centerpiece of a multi-billion-dollar downtown redevelopment, creating a new Sacramento neighborhood with retail, hotel, housing, and community amenities. The project will also reconnect the area to the ancestral home of Wilton Rancheria, which has remained vacant for decades.
