The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded California more than $110 million in grant funding to help finance construction of a new 240-bed building at the Veterans Home of California-Yountville, officials announced last week.
The funding will support infrastructure upgrades at the Yountville facility, one of eight veterans homes operated by the state and the largest veterans home in the nation.
The grant was awarded through the VA’s State Home Construction Grant Program, which helps states build, renovate and modernize facilities that provide long-term nursing and domiciliary care for veterans and their spouses.
“VA’s ongoing support of State Veterans Homes reaffirms our commitment to providing Veterans at all stages of life with the care and dignity they have earned,” VA Under Secretary for Health John Bartrum said in a statement. “These funds will support much needed upgrades to California’s 142-year-old facility and help ensure the comfort and safety of its residents.”
State Veterans Homes are owned and operated by state governments, while the federal program provides funding assistance for construction and renovation projects. The facilities are intended to provide affordable long-term care in settings designed specifically for veterans.
The Veterans Home of California-Yountville is one of 172 state-operated domiciliary and nursing homes located across all 50 states and Puerto Rico. The campus has served veterans for more than a century and remains a key component of California’s long-term care system for former service members.
The VA did not announce a timeline for construction of the new building. State officials also did not immediately release details on the project’s total cost or expected completion date.
The funding is part of the agency’s ongoing effort to modernize veterans care facilities nationwide and expand access to long-term care services for aging veterans.
