Clark Construction and its project partners have topped out the concrete structure of a new recruit barracks at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, marking a major structural milestone for the $??-million project.

Designed and owned by Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC), the 121,600-square-foot, three-storey P-314 Recruit Barracks will provide housing and support space for recruits training to become Marines.

The three-storey facility will include open-bay sleeping areas, drill instructor spaces and two company offices. The project also includes detached support structures, as well as extensive landscaping and hardscaping.

The team marked the concrete topping-out milestone after logging more than 60,000 safe work hours and completing several major construction activities.

More than 18,000 cubic yards of soil were handled during mass excavation, while 314 aggregate base piers were installed to stabilize the foundation.

The project used more than 8,400 cubic yards of concrete and 1,114 tons of reinforcing steel, including about 420 miles of rebar.

The team has also installed more than 5,560 linear feet of new utilities, including storm drainage, sewer, domestic and fire water, gas and electrical lines.

“Reaching this milestone safely is a direct reflection of the incredible collaboration between NAVFAC, our team, and our trade partners,” said Mike Guzzi, vice-president with Clark Construction.

“We are honoured to deliver a high-quality, resilient facility that will serve our nation’s Marines as they begin their journey of service.”

The topping-out marks the completion of the building’s concrete structure and moves the project into the next phase of construction as work continues toward completion of the new recruit facility.
