Construction has reached a major milestone on a new residential high-rise in San Diego’s Bankers Hill neighbourhood, as Suffolk Construction has announced the topping out of The Quince, a 261-unit multifamily development.

The milestone was marked with a celebration on site, where the final structural beam was placed on the 17-storey tower, which spans approximately 395,000 square feet. The event brought together more than 350 attendees, including trade partners, representatives from CAST Development, city officials, and members of the design and construction teams.

Suffolk Construction is serving as the general contractor for the project, while the building has been designed by Works Progress Architecture, in collaboration with development partner CAST Development.

Located at the northern edge of Maple Canyon where it winds toward San Diego Bay, the project occupies a prominent elevated site in Bankers Hill, one of the city’s most established urban neighbourhoods. The location places it near the edge of Balboa Park and within walking distance of major attractions including the San Diego Zoo, Little Italy, Downtown San Diego, and Hillcrest.

Developers say the building’s positioning on one of the highest points in the neighbourhood allows for sweeping canyon and ocean views. Lower-level units are designed to connect visually with the adjacent canyon landscape, while upper floors are expected to offer expansive, unobstructed views toward the Pacific Ocean.

The project also includes amenity spaces, outdoor pools, and ground-floor commercial space intended to activate street-level activity in the surrounding area.

The Quince will add 261 residential units to a dense urban corridor where demand for housing continues to grow amid limited land availability and increasing pressure for infill development.
