Apple announces second campus in unannounced location

As part of its commitment to invest $350 million to the U.S. economy, Apple has announced that it is constructing a second headquarters in a location that will be announced by the end of 2018.

The announcement made on Jan. 18 comes at the heels of a competition for suitable locations across America with online marketplace Amazon and the recent tax reform.

Signed into law toward the end of 2017, the new U.S. tax code lowered corporate taxes and created a one-time break on offshore funds. Apple is taking advantage of this benefit by returning $250 billion back to the country.

Apple’s new campus is initially housing technical support for customers, and along with other new data centers, will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy.

The company is investing $10 billion in such structures and it is also increasing its spending on advanced manufacturing from $1 billion to $5 billion.

“Apple is a success story that could only have happened in America, and we are proud to build on our long history of support for the US economy,” Apple’s chief executive Tim Cook says in a statement. “We believe deeply in the power of American ingenuity, and we are focusing our investment in areas where we can have a direct impact on job creation and job preparedness. We have a deep sense of responsibility to give back to our country and the people who help make our success possible.”

Apple’s announcement does not indicate any criteria that the company will use to choose the location for its new headquarters which it is building within the next five years.

The company recently opened its first campus in Cupertino, California that was designed by Foster+Partners.
