Construction has started on a fully affordable residential development in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury neighborhood.
Designed by Dutch practice Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) and local YA Studio, the 194,000 sq. ft. development includes 160 homes and amenities for families, formerly unhoused families and “transitional age youth”. Construction is expected to be completed in spring of 2025.
The ground floor will have a neighbourhood community hub and retail space connected to Haight Street, and the site will have gardens, an urban farm and a green roof.
According to OMA, the building’s design will maximise density and create pockets of light and open spaces for residential and commercial tenants.
The project is a partnership with the Chinatown Community Development Center (CCDC) and the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC).
“The groundbreaking of our first 100 per cent affordable housing project marks a significant first step toward providing new homes for families from the diverse communities that make up Haight Ashbury,” said Jason Long, partner at OMA, in a press release. “We shaped the building to create multiple corner units and pockets of outdoor space while playfully integrating with the neighborhood.
“We look forward to seeing our collective vision emerge at the doorstep of Golden Gate Park.”
