The Alameda County Board of Supervisors has awarded a $17.8 million construction contract to Plant Construction Company, L.P. of San Francisco for Phase II of the Lorenzo Theater Fire Rehabilitation and Façade Renovation Project.
The next phase of the project is scheduled to begin in September and includes interior reconstruction, restoration of historic black-light murals, and preservation of the building’s iconic façade features, including the marquee, tower, and ticket booth. Construction is expected to be completed in December 2026.
The Lorenzo Theater, located at 16080 Hesperian Blvd., was built in 1947 as a 700-seat movie theater. The county purchased the building in 2010 with plans to transform it into a public arts and entertainment venue. Two fires in 2020 prompted emergency stabilization work, including debris removal, seismic upgrades, and structural repairs.
“The Lorenzo Theater is a cultural landmark and a source of pride for San Lorenzo,” said Sandi Rivera, director of the Alameda County Community Development Agency. “This restoration is a key step in revitalizing the downtown area and creating new opportunities for community, culture, and economic growth.”
Lena Tam, vice president of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors and representative for District 3, said the project is central to downtown San Lorenzo’s renewal.
“The renovation will create economic vitality and remind us of our community’s resilience,” Tam said. “We are committed to rehabilitating the historic Lorenzo Theater as a key component to the rejuvenation of the downtown San Lorenzo commercial corridor.”
The Lorenzo Theatre Foundation praised the announcement, saying, “After decades of working tirelessly to save this historic gem, we are thrilled the Lorenzo will once again be a beacon of pride for the Village.”
The theater is listed on the California Register of Historical Resources.
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at the theater on Thursday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. Community members, stakeholders, and the media are invited to attend. Tam is expected to speak at the event.
