Ground has been broken on a mixed-use development next to Norwalk City Hall that city officials say will add new dining, shopping and public gathering space in the Southern California community.
The project, known as The Walk, officially began construction Feb. 7 following a ceremony attended by representatives of the City of Norwalk, developer Primestor Development and architecture firm DLR Group.
Located adjacent to Norwalk City Hall, the project has been in development for several years and is intended to create a pedestrian-oriented destination with retail space and public plazas.
City officials say the development is part of broader efforts to revitalize the area around City Hall and provide additional amenities for residents.
“For many years, residents have shared that in addition to existing local dining and shopping, there is a need in Norwalk for more options and a central place to gather as part of everyday community life,” Mayor Jennifer Perez said in a statement. “The Walk reflects that input by bringing dining, shopping and entertainment together in one walkable public space.”
The development will include about 89,000 sq. ft. of retail space and a network of landscaped pathways, plazas and open areas intended for public gatherings and community events.
Design work for the project is being led by DLR Group, which is providing architectural and planning services. The design incorporates outdoor spaces, murals by local artists and materials such as stone and metal paneling.
“Our vision for The Walk focused on creating an environment that encourages gathering and connection while respecting the civic context and fostering a true sense of community,” said Jose A. Sanchez.
The project’s design draws inspiration from nearby Paddison Farm, known for its peacocks, and reflects the mid-century modern architecture of City Hall, officials said.
“At Primestor, our mission is to build places that serve as anchors for the communities we are privileged to serve,” said Arturo Sneider.
Construction of The Walk is expected to be completed in late 2027.
