Construction has begun on the first phase of the redevelopment of Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza in Los Angeles, marking the start of work on a long-planned transformation of the historic South Los Angeles site.

City leaders and community stakeholders gathered March 5 for a groundbreaking ceremony launching Phase 1 of the project, which will begin with demolition of the former Sears building and site preparation for new housing.

The first phase will include construction of 92 residential homes and is part of a multi-phase, city-approved plan to revitalize the 42-acre shopping center property, considered one of the most historically and culturally significant commercial sites in South Los Angeles.

The redevelopment is being built by the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza Partnership, with development partners Harridge Development Group, Access Industries, Atlas Capital Group and Silverpeak Real Estate Partners, in coordination with the city and public agencies.

Developers say the broader project aims to bring new housing and investment to the area while maintaining the cultural significance of the site, which has long served as a commercial and community hub in South Los Angeles.

Demolition and site preparation will begin immediately following the groundbreaking, marking the start of construction for the redevelopment’s initial phase.
