Skanska has been awarded a $57 million contract by the City of San Diego for improvements to El Camino Real in Del Mar, that will widen the heavily traveled corridor, replace an aging bridge and add new multimodal infrastructure.
Construction is scheduled to begin in December 2026, with completion expected in August 2030.
The El Camino Real Half Mile to Via De La Valle project will widen El Camino Real to four lanes and replace the 84-year-old San Dieguito River Bridge.
The project is designed to improve traffic flow and safety while addressing drainage and flooding concerns along the San Dieguito River. Work will also include riverbank stabilization to help protect the corridor from future erosion and improve its long-term resilience.
The roadway improvements will be accompanied by separated bike lanes, new sidewalks and upgraded traffic signals. The project also will include an equestrian-friendly trail beneath the new bridge that will connect to the planned Coast to Crest Trail.
The improvements are intended to provide a more reliable connection between Del Mar, Solana Beach and surrounding communities while improving conditions for motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and equestrians.
“This project reflects our commitment to delivering resilient infrastructure that strengthens the communities in which we live and work,” said James Bailey, executive vice president of Skanska USA Civil’s West Coast operations. “The replacement of the 84-year-old San Dieguito River Bridge and upgrading the drainage and flood protection will improve safety and traffic flow while strengthening the corridor’s long-term resilience to flooding and waterway erosion.”
