Construction began in September on a six-storey affordable housing development in Mountain View that will provide approximately 108 apartments for families earning 30 to 80 per cent of the area median income.

Alta Housing is developing the La Bella affordable housing community at 1020 Terra Bella Ave. on a 1.04-acre site donated by Public Storage.

The project has received a $13.5-million commitment from the City of Mountain View. Completion is anticipated in the second quarter of 2028.

City, county and state officials joined nonprofit leaders, Alta Housing and its development partners to mark the start of construction.

“La Bella is a great example of what we can accomplish when the City, affordable housing partners, and the private sector work together and think creatively about how we use land,” said Mountain View Mayor Emily Ann Ramos. “Through a land swap and donation from Public Storage, Alta Housing was able to assemble a larger site and roughly double the number of affordable homes that could be built here.

“I’m grateful to Alta Housing, Public Storage, and all of our local, state, and federal partners who helped make this possible, and I’m excited to celebrate another step toward making Mountain View a community where people of all incomes can call home.”

The site is in a former industrial area transitioning to higher-density residential development.

Mountain View Mayor Emily Ann Ramos said the project is intended to help residents remain in the community as housing costs put pressure on household budgets.

“At a time when affordability challenges are pushing too many people out of the communities they love, projects like this show what is possible when we use public land creatively and work in partnership to deliver permanently affordable housing,” Ramos said.

The development will help maintain a mix of incomes in Mountain View, while providing long-term affordable housing for families, she said.
