Ross Stores Inc. plans to invest about $500 million to build a 1.75-million-sq. ft. processing and distribution centre in Bakersfield, a project expected to create nearly 1,000 jobs.
The facility will be built near East Belle Terrace and Mount Vernon Avenue in southeast Bakersfield. Construction is expected to begin in 2027 as part of a multi-year development.
The project will become the retailer’s 10th distribution centre and expand its distribution network to support long-term growth.
Bakersfield was selected following nearly two years of site selection and due diligence, including work with city staff to identify a suitable location. Labour market analysis conducted by site consultants J.M. Mullis Inc. found the area had the workforce needed to support the facility, according to the city.
“This is the largest job generating project sited in Bakersfield in decades. This is an important step and signal in our efforts to grow and diversify our economy,” Bakersfield City Manager Christian Clegg said.
“We showed we can fast track, use our development streamlining muscles, form partnerships and have a customer-first approach for this project. This is a great win for Bakersfield and the region.”
Rob Kummerer, executive vice-president of supply chain at Ross Stores, said the facility would expand the company’s presence in the Greater Bakersfield area.
“This facility will strengthen our operations, support continued growth, and create new employment opportunities in the community,” Kummerer said. “We are grateful for the partnership and support of the many state and local leaders whose collaboration helped make this project possible.”
Bakersfield Mayor Karen Goh said the development would provide employment opportunities for local residents and generate an estimated $100 million or more in annual economic impact through wages reinvested in the community.
“The City of Bakersfield welcomes our new partner with open arms!” Goh said.
“Many thanks to the City Staff, the Mullis Group, and the other partners that made this collaborative effort into a project reality. We look forward to our partnership with a community minded Ross Stores.”
Ross and the city acknowledged support from the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development, Jennifer Faughn of the Central Valley Economic Development Corporation and B3K Prosperity in securing the project.
