California announces $3 billion for transportation improvements

The California Transportation Commission (CTC) has announced $3 billion for 14 projects to repair and improve transportation infrastructure across the state.

“This allocation Caltrans and our local partners to continue building the equitable, sustainable, and safe transportation system on which future generations will depend,” said Tony Tavares, Caltrans director.

The CTC allocated more than $2.1 billion to Caltrans’ Division of Local Assistance in its annual federal fiscal year for more than 600 cities, counties and regional agencies across California to build and improve roads, bridges, tunnels and other transportation infrastructure, and for projects that “enhance safety and help protect the environment”. Annually, more than 1,200 new projects are authorized.

Projects approved last week include:

Eureka:

  • $1.9 million for roadway, guardrail and culvert repairs along Route 299 west of Three Creek Road.
  • $1.1 million for construction of a left turn lane at Timbers Boulevard and roadway improvements along U.S. 101.
  • $2.6 million for embankment, guardrail and drainage repairs along U.S. 101 from Water Plant Road to the East Hill Undercrossing.

Alameda County:

  • $7.7 million to repair channel and reinforce bridge approach slabs in Oakland at East Creek Slough Bridge.
  • $3 million to repair damaged bridge girder at Gilman Street Undercrossing.
  • $2.9 million to install vehicle speed feedback signs and upgrade signals in  Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, and San Leandro.
  • $864,000 to apply high friction surface treatment and install guardrail and drainage inlets on I-680 in Fremont.

Alameda, San Francisco and San Mateo Counties:

  • $11.1 million to install and upgrade transportation management systems elements including closed circuit television cameras, vehicle detection systems, changeable message signs, ramp meters and fiber optic cable in Alameda, San Francisco, and San Mateo counties on Routes 80, 101, 880, and 980 at various locations.

Contra Costa County:

  • $84.9 million to install lighting and install new concrete barrier, upgrade guardrail and drainage and overlay pavement to improve safety on I-80 from Alameda County line to 0.6 miles West of Solano County line.
  • $63.9 million to replace damaged pavement slabs, grind and resurface existing asphalt, construct additional lanes on offramp, modify signals, upgrade guardrail  on SR-4 in Contra Costa County.
  • $6.4 million to apply polyester concrete overlay on bridge decks and approach slabs on I-680 in Danville, San Ramon, and Walnut Creek in various locations.

San Mateo County:

  • $37.8 million to replace Cordilleras Creek Bridge on Route 101 in Redwood City.
  • $4.1 million to repair slope wash out and construct soldier pile wall to prevent further erosion on existing embankment on SR-84.

Santa Clara County:

  • $17.7 million to replace Saratoga Creek Bridge near Saratoga.
  • $1.3 million to install edge line and centerline rumble strips, widen roadway, and install curve warning signs on SR-152 near Gilroy.
  • $506,000 to construct rumble strips, upgrade guardrail, and install high-visibility striping on I-101 near Gilroy.

Solano County:

  • $3 million to replace bridge at Miner Slough Bridge.

Sonoma County:

  • $2.4 million for abutment scour mitigation and channel sediment cleaning to address flooding on Highway 101 in Petaluma.

Los Angeles:

  • $18.6 million to rehabilitate pavement, modify signals, upgrade guardrail, and
    upgrade facilities on  Interstate 605, in the cities of Irwindale and Baldwin Park.

San Diego:

  • $4.6 million to pave slopes under structures and areas beyond the gore, add rumble strips and enhance highway worker safety at various locations on Interstate 8 (I-8) and State Route 111 in El Centro.
  • $9.3 million to rehabilitate six bridges on I-8 and State Route 78 (SR-78) in El Centro.
  • $56 million to construct an auxiliary lane, rehabilitate the roadway on State Route 52 (SR-52) between Convoy Street and Santo Road.
  • $17.9 million to rehabilitate pavement on  Route 54 from Interstate 5 (I-5) to State Route 125 (SR-125).
  • $42.8 million to rehabilitate roadway and culverts, install new and upgrade TMS elements on SR-125 from Elkelton Place and State Route (SR-94).
