Sacramento State has broken ground on Hornet Place, a new campus-affiliated housing community designed to support students beyond their first year.

Scheduled to open for the Fall 2027 semester, Hornet Place will house 352 students in 101 units across one-, two-, and four-bedroom floorplans, including double-occupancy layouts. The four-story development will feature amenities that foster connection and wellbeing, including a pool, fitness center, yoga area, dedicated study spaces, media and game rooms, outdoor fire pit and BBQ areas, surface parking, secure bike storage, and 1,832 square feet of ground-floor retail space.

President Luke Wood said the project addresses a range of student needs: “It’s important for us to be able to provide the kind of living and learning opportunities that are necessary to support a whole range of different issues. It addresses housing insecurity, it addresses safety for students, and it also addresses, most importantly, student success.”

The housing community, located at 7700 College Town Drive, aims to strengthen student retention by helping residents build friendships, engage with campus life, and focus on completing their degrees.

The property was purchased by University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI), a Sacramento State auxiliary organization. Greystar Development, which manages the adjacent Hornet Commons, is the builder, long-term leaseholder, and operator. JLC Infrastructure, an asset management firm, is also a partner in the project, marking its first investment in student housing.

The groundbreaking ceremony on Friday included ASI President Aranjot Kaur, President Luke Wood, and other campus and community leaders.
